혜인이는 초등학교 6학년, 영인이는 유치원생… 둘은 자매랍니다. 겉보기에 다른 철부지 어린이들과 똑같고 특히 영인이는 아직 투정도 많이 부리고 울기도 많이 한답니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 이 두 아이들에게 특별한 찬양의 은사를 주셨으며 아주 어릴 때부터 이들을 장래의 찬양사역자로서 거룩하게 구별하셨습니다.
전국 어린이 찬송가피아노콩쿨은 어린이들을 세상의 타락한 문화로부터 보호하며, 저들에게 잊혀져가는 찬송가를 가르치며 장래의 찬양사역자들을 길러내는 사명을 갖고 2001년부터 한국에서 열리고 있습니다. 특히 2004년부터는 미국 워싱턴에서도 이 콩쿨이 열려 더욱 많은 어린이들이 찬송의 기쁨을 배우고 있지요. 바로 2001년에 열렸던 제1회 콩쿨에서 혜인이는 대상을 차지하며 우리에게 알려지게 됩니다. 그러니까 이 콩쿨의 첫 열매인 셈입니다. 그리고 2년 후, 동생 영인이는 언니 혜인이와 함께 연탄부에 참가, 다른 학생과 공동대상을 차지하는 한편, 이듬해에는 독주부문에서 1등을 차지하며 화려한(?) 데뷔를 하게됩니다. 우리는 이들을 “찬양꿈나무 1세대”라고 부르기를 주저하지 않습니다. 사실 이 콩쿨을 통해 적지 않은 천재적인 아이들이 발굴되었고 이들은 어린이 찬양캠프, 찬양음악회 등을 통해 지속적으로 찬양사역의 비젼을 키우고 있습니다. 위의 성경말씀처럼 어린이 찬양사역은 대단히 중요합니다. 어릴 때부터 찬송을 즐기는 어린이들은 하나님께서 특별한 은혜를 베푸십니다. 찬송 중에 거하시는 하나님께서(시편22:3) 어린이들의 찬송 가운데 거하시며 그들을 만나주시기 때문입니다. 사실 혜인이와 영인이도 이 콩쿨을 통해 찬양사역의 구체적인 비젼을 갖게 된 수많은 어린이들 중 하나입니다. 어릴 때 받은 좋은 영향은 한 사람의 일생에 막대한 영향을 끼칩니다.
어린이 찬송가피아노교본은 교회음악 작곡가 김명환이 어린이 찬양사역에 관심을 갖고 어린이들이 올바른 기독교문화의 보호를 받지 못하는 것과 예배음악의 중심인 찬송가가 잊혀지는 것을 안타까이 여겨 만들게 된 책으로 성령의 도우심으로 1998년 2월 한 달 동안에 60곡 전곡이 완성되었습니다. 이 책을 만들고 나서 “1000권을 기증하라”는 강한 성령의 음성을 들은 김명환은 그로부터 약 5년 동안 – 여러 후원자들의 뜨거운 헌신과 기도의 도움으로 – 약 14,000권 정도의 책을 전 세계에 기증하게 됩니다. (국방일보 2000년 9월 7일자에서 일부 내용 소개) 이 책은 어린이 찬송가피아노콩쿨의 교재로 쓰일 뿐 아니라 여러 음악학원, 찬송가교실 등에서도 쓰이고 있으며 현재는 새찬양후원회 홈페이지(http://newpraise.org)를 통해 이 책에 수록된 모든 곡을 무료로 출력할 수 있어 이를 통하여 전세계적으로 어린이 찬양운동이 일어나고 있습니다. 김명환은 그 이후에도 “어린이를 위한 찬송가변주곡”을 3집까지 계속 내놓았고 4집부터는 역시 인터넷을 통해 출력할 수 있도록 할 예정입니다. 성경적인 찬양사역자는 잘 준비된 찬양사역자입니다. 그리고 그 준비를 위해서는 하나님의 특별한 재능 외에도 일생을 통한 훈련과정이 필요함은 모두 알고 있습니다. 그러나 찬양사역자, 또는 교회음악가를 어릴 때부터 구별해서 교육하는데 관심을 갖는 교회는 거의 없습니다. 하나님을 찬양하는 음악은 거룩한 음악인 동시에 최고의 음악입니다. 요한 세바스챤 바흐는 찬송가 멜로디로 수많은 오르간곡과 칸타타를 만들었고 멘델스존은 “내 주는 강한 성이요”의 멜로디를 사용해서 저 유명한 “종교개혁 교향곡”을 작곡했습니다. 그리고 이들 모두 어릴 때부터 음악과 신앙의 교육을 받았습니다. 특히 피아노교육은 음악을 이해하는 데 필수적입니다. 어린이 찬송가 피아노콩쿨은 단지 장래의 찬양 피아니스트만을 키우는 것이 아니라 장래의 지휘자, 작곡가, 노래하는 자, 오르가니스트 등 모든 종류의 찬양사역자들을 키우는 것을 그 목표로 하고 있지요.
피아노찬양을 포함한 기악찬양은 많은 경우 가사가 없다는 이유로 경시되어집니다. 그러나 이미 가사가 널리 알려진 찬양을 기악으로 연주할 때 듣는 모든 이들은 그 내용을 이해합니다. 기악찬양은 모든 언어를 초월하는 힘이 있고 성악의 표현한계를 넘어 더욱 높이, 더욱 민첩하고 공교하게 하나님을 찬양할 수 있습니다. 그러므로 성경은 성악에 의지하지 않은 독자적인 기악찬양에 대해 여러 번 기록하고 있습니다. (시43:4, 45:8, 71:22) 나아가 하나님 스스로 나팔을 부시는 장면(슥9:14) 또한 기록되어 있는 것을 볼 때 기악은 그 자체로서 매우 중요한 가치를 갖고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
혜인이와 영인이는 아직 많이 어리고 여러가지로 부족합니다. 그리하여 이 CD는 이 아이들의 부족함을 그대로 나타내고 있습니다. 그러나 이 CD에는 동시에 이들의 눈부신 재능과 찬양에의 열정, 그리고 그 부모의 헌신적인 사랑과 기도 역시 그대로 나타나 있습니다. 혜인이는 어린이 찬송가피아노콩쿨의 첫 열매이고, 어린이 찬송가피아노교본이 만들어지던 바로 그 해에 영인이는 탄생했습니다. 참으로 신기한 일치가 아닐 수 없습니다. 새찬양후원회는 이 사랑스런 찬양꿈나무들을 세상에 널리 알리게 됨을 매우 기쁘게 생각하며 이들의 장래를 축복하는 뜻에서, 또 이들로 인해 일어날 수많은 찬양꿈나무들을 기대하며 이 CD의 녹음과 제작의 모든 경비를 지원하였습니다. 이 작은 CD 하나가 어린이 찬양사역의 큰 증거요, 보이지 않는 곳에서 이들을 후원하고 위해서 기도한 모든 이들의 아름다운 열매로 하나님께 드려져 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 찬미의 제사(히13:15)가 되기를 간절히 바라며…

Hye-In, a girl in 6th class, and Young-In, her sister in kindergarten, may look like average mere children at their respective age, especially Young-In being with much grumbling and frequent crying. But God endowed them with rare gift of music and moreover kept them holy since their early childhood as praise musicians in the future.
The nationwide children’s piano hymn competition has been held annually since 2001 in Korea, whose important missions are to protect children from being exposed to the depraved culture, to teach them traditional hymn tunes effectively, and to nurse future praise musician. The same competition expanded into the United States by holding a regional in Washington D.C. in 2004, motivating more children to praise the Lord with having fun and joy. At the first competition in Korea back in 2001, Hye-In became the winner of the Grand Prix, which meant that she became the first fruit of this special competition. Two years later, her younger sister Young-In, at the age of five, boldly took part in the same competition with her sister in the duo division, also won the Grand Prix with another team. It was only a year later that Young-In won the first prize in the solo division, making a gorgeous start of her career. It is not hasty to call them “the first generation of praise dream-tree”. (It means the most possible new figure in the future.) In fact quite a few talented children were discovered in this competition, which is since then incessantly nursing the vision of praise ministry with their participating in praise camps and praise concerts regularly. As the word of the Bible above says, the praise ministry for children is very important. God gives special grace to children who enjoy praising God, because He, who dwells in the praises of Israel, will also dwell in their praises with taking care of each of them. Actually Hye-In and Young-In are two of those many children who achieved the solid vision of praise ministry through this competition. The good influence children get in their young years influence their life throughout the years.
Children’s Hymnbook for piano was made by the church music composer, Myung Whan Kim. He was particularly concerned about praise ministry for children and was urged to compile this method book by the fact that children were not properly protected by Christian culture and that traditional hymn tunes, the main stream of church music, are being forgotten to them little by little. This book was completed when sixty hymn arrangements were composed in just one month, in February 1998, with the help of the Lord. After finishing that book, moved by the Holy Spirit, Kim donated it, was supported by some Christians who were equally moved by the Holy Spirit, at first to all orphanages in Korea, then to other children who would need it. Amazingly in five years, approximately 14,000 copies were donated. A Korean military newspaper, Kuk-Bang-Ilbo, wrote an article about the donation on 7. Sept. 2000, because a lot of books were donated to Korean war veterans from many countries. This book is used not only for the children’s piano hymn competition but also in many music institutes and hymn classes. And now all of sixty pieces of this book can be printed out freely via webpage of New Praise Support Edition(http://newpraise.org) to promote praise ministry for children all over the world. Kim has a plan to publish Vol.4 on the webpage after already having published its successors “Children’s Hymn Variation for piano Vol.1, 2, and 3. On March 2002, a Korean daily newspaper, Kuk-Min-Ilbo introduced these books and various activities of Kim. It is only through these books that the children’s piano hymn competition could have begun, which grows now more and more internationally.
The biblical praise musicians are those who are well prepared in every respect, and for this preparation, one needs not only to be well-talented but also to be well-trained through many years. Nevertheless, it would be difficult to find any church that is really interested in any kind of special and separate education of children for praise ministry. Sacred music of praise is holy as well as superb in many aspects. J. S. Bach wrote many organ pieces and cantatas with various choral melodies and F. Mendelssohn composed the famous “Reformation Symphony”, using the melody of “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” written by M. Luther. And these two great composers obtained appropriate musical training in the faithful family from childhood. Especially piano lesson has a significant meaning to understand music comprehensively and at its very core. The purpose of Children’s Piano Hymn Competition is not only to educate children for the future piano praise ministry, but also to educate them for all kinds of praise musicians such as choir directors, organists, singers, and so forth.
Piano praise, along with other instrumental
praises, is in many cases belittled because of the lack of the text. However
the meaning of instrumental praise can be well understood and so appreciated if
the text of the song is well known. Instrumental praise transcends any
linguistic barrier and also transcends easily the limit of vocal expression.
The Bible wrote often about pure instrumental praise as in Psalm43:4, 45:8, and
in 71:22. Considering that it describes also the scene in which “the Lord God shall blow the trumpet” (Zechariah9:14), it is obvious how important the instrumental
praise in the Bible is.
Hye-In and Young-In, they are still very young, short of many things, and not trained like adults, which will be heard on this CD. After all Young-In is now only six. However in this CD could also be found their brilliance - and in some sense crude - talent, their enthusiasm for praise, and unlimited sacrifice, with love in prayer, of their parents. As mentioned earlier, Hye-In is the first fruit of the competition. Young-In has the same birth year with Children’s Hymnbook for piano. New Praise Support Edition, originally founded to support the activity of composition of dedicated church music composer Myung Whan Kim, is very pleased and proud to introduce these girl wonder and infant prodigy to all over the world. NPSE produced this CD with best blessings to them, hoping to see many other praise dream-trees who will rise up due to them, with earnestly praying that this CD be the sacrifice of praise (Heb.13:15), which pleases God a lot as a witness of history of children’s praise ministry as well as a beautiful fruit of those who supported and prayed for children…
