김명환의 코랄환타지에 대해 이번 음악회 프로그램에 실린 글:

  치과의사 출신의 작곡가 김명환은 교회음악 작곡가로 부름을 받았다. 그는 빈 국립음대를 최우수 성적으로 졸업하였으며 고대 히브리에서부터 현대까지의 교회 음악을 연구하였다. 그는 빈에서 몇 번의 상을 수상하였으며 1992년에는 빈 시로부터 "올해의 작곡가" 상을 받기도 하였다. 그는 현재 천안대학의 교수이자 할렐루야 교회의 다윗 성가대 지휘자이다. Fanny Crosby의 복음찬가인 "예수께로 가면"을 주제로 한 그의 코랄환타지는 전주곡, 푸가와 코랄 등의 형식을 모두 포함한 음악적 복합체로서 C. Franck의 작품과도 흡사한 면이 있다. 이 음악을 올바로 이해하려면 '하나님의 신비'가 무엇인지를 먼저 알아야 한다. 이 음악은 전통화성과는 다른 독특한 화성적 배경을 갖고 있다. 이것은 무슨 수학적 계산에 의해 만들어진 것도 아니요, 12음기법의 그것도 아니요, 오히려 작곡가 자신의 본능과 전통화성의 확장된 해석에 따른 것이다. 원곡에 내재하는 화성적 대위법적 가능성을 연구한 후에 작곡가는 이를 음악적, 영적 원리에 따라 발전시켰으니, 이는 이 곡을 연주하는 자와 듣는 자 모두 예수께로 인도되도록 한 것이다. 전주곡은 조용한 흠모와 깊은 경배를, 푸가는 믿음의 실천과 때때로 만나는 시험을, 코랄은 천국의 찬양과 하나님의 권위를 나타낸다. 여기에는 한국음악적 요소도 잠재되어 있다.

  한국음악의 특징 중 하나는 그 템포가 대단히 느려 듣는 이들이 시간의 흐름을 제대로 감지할 수 없다는 것인데 이 곡의 전주곡에 이 원칙이 적용되었다. 그리고 한국음악의 또 다른 특징인 조성적 불확정성 또한 푸가의 여러 부분에서 볼 수 있다. 작곡가는 또한 이 곡의 마지막 부분에서 종소리 화성을 사용하였다.

  캘벗 죤슨 교수는 이 대학에서 오르간, 하프시코드, 교회음악, 음악사, 음악에 있어서의 여성 등의 과목을 가르치고 있으며 CD를 내고 여러 유명한 상을 받았으며 여러 저서를 집필하였다. 이번 음악회 프로그램과 그의 홈페이지에서 보다 자세한 정보를 얻을 수 있다. 죤슨 교수가 김명환 교수에게 보낸 몇몇 글들을 첨부하였다.

Thank you so very much for your prompt reply. AND today a package arrived with volume 2 of Organ Praise. I am most grateful to you. What a surprise to learn that I will be playing the world premiere of your wonderful organ composition. It deserves a wider hearing, including in Korea. Please rest assured that I will arrange for somebody to record the concert and I will send you a copy. In the summer of 2000 I spent several weeks for the first time in your homeland and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It would be a great pleasure and honor to return and this time to play concerts. One of my former students from Korea attempted to set up a concert at the large Presbyterian church in Seoul, but I was unable to obtain funding to cover my travel expenses. Unfortunately, she seems to have moved, and I don't have her new address.

Attached is a copy of the recital program, prior to printing. I am still collecting information in order to write the program notes, but am most pleased to have such a full description by you for your delightful composition. The only detail I might request--if you are willing to share the information--is your birth year. As you can see, it is programmed last on the concert because nothing else could possibly follow it. I am sending invitations to every Korean church in metro Atlanta (there are at least a dozen, some with several thousand members) to come to the concert. Needless to say, the invitation is to everyone, including children. I have no doubt that your work will be very well received. It sounds quite good on our large concert hall organ (IV manual Austin, 1940). In the event you decide to come to Atlanta to attend the premiere, please let me know. I may be able to arrange for you to stay in our alumnae house at no cost to yourself.
