The father of the organs, the hydraulic organ, had great volume, so it was an instrument used in Roman stadiums. The pictures in the relic of the Emperor Period, which were the times of attacking Christianity by Nero, Trajanus, and the others, were found. And even in the period of Nero's, there was a contest to choose the best hydraulic organist. When we guess from this record, this instrument should have been used when many Christians martyred. Out of many reasons, there could be this kind of reason why instruments were prohibited in the early church. Meanwhile, in the 16th century, organ was treated very badly as the religious reformation covered all over Europe. J. Calvin prohibited organs from church and what is worse, U. Zwingli destroyed several organs and expelled them out of the church. Thankfully, Luther permitted organs. But why do we still want organ praise? Its unique beauty is the answer. Songs for the organs were made continuously throughout human history to praise God with organs. In fact, the organ's sound itself doesn't show how great the instrument is. That beauty can only be seen and proved through the great works of the people whom God bestows talents and then it can be dedicated to God. In that sense, new works show the hidden beauty of organs. Therefore, as J. Cocteau says, "Works don't subordinate to composers, but the composer subordinate to the works," organs also subordinate to the work for organ. Another reason why we insist on organ praise is that organ is an instrument which continuously becomes new. King David¡¯s enthusiasm for praising God was so great that he even made new instruments. In the middle of the 19th century, French technician Aristide Cavaille-Coll(1811-1899) added Vox celeste stop(register) to organ. After this, organ is still becoming new. As in Psalms 33;3, 40:3, 96:1, 98:1, 144:9, 149:1, Isaiah 42:10, and Revelation 5:9, 14:3, the Bible's teaching "sing to Him a new song" corresponds with making a new instrument, because new instruments enable new songs to be created. Today, we read Psalms of David and learn a great deal in God. And why shouldn't we also learn his great passion in the instruments in praising God? So, having interests in organs with such great possibility frontier is definitely obvious. Furthermore, we should care and participate in the new songs for the organs. Even with these merits and endless possibilities, we should think about how rightfully the organs are used in God¡¯s services in Korea. How will God think about some churches bring in large, fancy organs for only displaying functions? Will He be happy? First, the serious problem is that people consider organs simply as an accompaniment for service. The Bible says ¡°I'll praise with instruments¡± (Psalms 43:4, 45:8, 71:22, 150). That doesn't only mean playing songs accompanied by instruments, but praising by the instruments. With the important role of the organ in fulfilling that, we should be able to reset the service accordingly. In the Bible, there's also a surprising scene where God himself blows a trumpet in Zechariah 9:14! To Jewish, instruments have an important meaning. Since Schofar(trumpet made with the male sheep's horn) was an instrument which recall to mind the scene of Abraham devoting Issac to God, it was never banned. As for the silver trumpet(Hachochera), God told in details the way of performance, usage and materials directly. The reason why instruments are important is not that the instruments are important but that the instrumental praise is important. Therefore in the times of the Old Testament, the horn blower blew until the burnt offering to God was finished (2 Chronicles 29:28) The biggest problem is that many of the church leaders in Korea do not know the value of the organists. In many cases organists are just treated as a regular service volunteer without professionalism. The organists' real task is leading the whole service as a minister who must be equipped with spirituality and musicality. (This will be possible in the churches that are equipped correctly.) On the other hand, numerous organists who do not know their own tasks should repent deeply. Therefore, the organists should prepare for the praise in the service throughout the whole week so that the service is led with beautiful praise and worship. This means that the organist must be there full time with the financial back up and the treatment of an important person. In regards to that, the organists should give their best efforts spiritually and musically for higher density and quality of His praise. I have gathered here organ praises of mine made with themes of famous Hymns and Gospel songs which I think are suitable for God¡¯s service, which are also my favorites as well as with the theme of my own. Occasionally I¡¯ve written them with the heart of the organist who suffers from unconscionable musical situation in church. I wish that this small book refreshes the true meaning of the organ praise and the recovery of the real purpose of its role. And furthermore, this does like J. S. Bach made Orgelbüchlein for organ education and for artistic organ concert. I frankly hope that through this book, the organist will be persuaded that they made a marvelous decision in becoming an organist. Originally organs weren't meant for His worship. But as we look how much this preciously used for God, the history of the organ is very similar to our routes to go forth in faith. As I think of that, I think about our traditional korean instruments such as Janggo, Kumungo, Kajagum, and etcetera for praise application, because all is His. So all must be used in the best ways possible for He is worthy. I give sincere thanks and glory to His amazing grace that gives such inspiration to this humble being. And I lay this aid in God's worship at the first Easter of the new millennium. Hallelujah! (translated by So-Rai Choi) Myung Whan KIM, The Composer
