Three
years have already passed since I completed the Children's Hymnbook for Piano.
Looking back, it still amazes me to think of how the Lord has worked through
that small book. At a time when there was practically no resource dedicated to
educating children about praise music, the Holy Spirit marvelously inspired me
to create a selection of piano hymns for children, and I will never be able to
forget how the Lord strengthened and enabled me to complete the entire scoring
process in a single month. My wife, who is a pianist as well, was immeasurably
helpful in the selecting the appropriate songs, transcribing the fingering
notation, and designing the front cover. To be sure, there were difficulties
along the way, but the Lord met all of our needs at just the right time and
somehow made it possible for us to produce 2000 copies in our initial printing.
Through the generous support of many individuals since then, we have donated
more than 13,000 copies throughout the world including orphanages and
children's homes, veterans of the Korean War, the Far East Broadcasting Company
(FEBC), a Christian radio broadcasting company based in Korea, and Agnes
Scott College in the United States. Moreover, last year, we hosted the first
international Children's Piano Hymns Concours, based on the Children's Hymnbook
for Piano. (Please visit http://newpraise.org
for additional testimonies surrounding this book.) Also known as the king of stringed instruments, the violin rivals even the piano in its familiarity as a musical instrument. In fact, the violin has an even older history than the piano and stringed instruments have been mentioned numerous times in the Bible. Psalms 4, 6, 54, 61 and 76 were written specifically for accompaniment by stringed instruments, and Psalm 150 commands that strings be used to praise God. Furthermore, Psalm 45:8 goes as far as to state that the "music of the strings pleases" the King, alluding to how God is pleased with the praise music from stringed instruments. This book was created so that children may gain proficiency on the violin by playing selections from the hymnal. It was also designed in a duet format so that the teacher and student can play together during instruction sessions. However, this book is not solely intended to be a collection of etudes but rather contains both the artistic and spiritual characteristics that make it suitable for performance during a worship service or at a concert. As with my other books published for ¡°children¡±, I do worry slightly that the general public will assume this book to be read and played only by children. It should be clarified that, in my mind, the word 'Children' has come to hold three distinct meanings: of course, our younger friends; but also 'children' as seen through God's eyes (that is, all Christians), as well as certain youngsters that exhibit signs of musical prodigy. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that some of the selections in this book may seem to be beyond the reasonable capabilities of normal children, or that perhaps an accomplished violinist may perform selections from this book at his or her own concert. To be sure, most of the selections have been included with the average child's musical skills in mind. It is my sincere hope that this book will become a valuable resource for children around the world and that it will help them to meet the God who inhabits our praise. In closing, I would like to thank members of the New Praise Support Organization for always generously supporting me in my work, and may God receive all glory, honor and thanksgiving. Hallelujah!
